GEORGIA BAR EXAM
The Georgia Bar Exam is a two-day examination consisting of two Multistate Performance Test (MPT) items, four Georgia essay questions, and the Multistate Bar Examination (MBE).
On Day 1, you will complete two 90-minute MPTs in the morning and four Georgia essay questions in the afternoon. The Georgia essays may test Business Organizations, Constitutional Law, Contracts, Criminal Law and Procedure, Evidence, Family Law, Federal Practice and Procedure, Georgia Practice and Procedure, Non-Monetary Remedies, Professional Ethics, Property, Torts, Trusts, Wills and Estates, and Articles 2 and 3 of the Uniform Commercial Code. More than one subject may be tested in a single essay. Secured Transactions (Article 9) is no longer tested on the Georgia essay portion.
The MPT does not test your ability to memorize additional substantive law. Instead, you are given a file and library and asked to complete a realistic legal task using the materials provided. Success on the MPT requires strong organization, time management, legal analysis, and the ability to follow the specific task instructions.
On Day 2, you will complete the 200-question MBE, covering Civil Procedure, Constitutional Law, Contracts, Criminal Law and Procedure, Evidence, Real Property, and Torts.
The MBE accounts for 50% of your total Georgia score, while the essays and MPTs make up the remaining 50%. Each of the two MPTs is weighted 1.5 times as much as an individual Georgia essay question. A total scaled score of 270 or higher is required to pass the Georgia Bar Exam.
